Language and Music

Native Californians spoke more than 80 distinct languages, with hundreds of dialects, making California one of the most diverse language regions in the world.

Stories and songs from many Native Californian languages were recorded by ethnographers and linguists. To preserve these resources, many recordings were duplicated, transcribed, or digitized, and made accessible to the public. For more information about language areas, see the Interactive Map Tool.
